“Writing Romance Doesn’t Have to Be as Hard as You Think”
Have you read books and Facebook group comments from authors who make a nice living because of their (many) romance books?
Have you secretly envied those people but thought that you could never do that?
If so, I have good news for you. Writing and publishing frequently is not nearly as hard as you think.

I’ve definitely been in your shoes.
After I’d finished writing my first two novellas, I learned about a particular romance niche with plenty of opportunity.
So I planned my novella and slowly wrote through the 20K+ words.
Writing Way too Slowly
I was one of several people who joined a Facebook group that served as a mastermind group for writers of that kind of romance.
Soon after, the first ones published.
I was still hunched over my keyboard, striving to do the best writing I could and aiming at a novella-length book.
My Fellow Writers Published…
They were seemingly spitting out books, one after the other.
Sure, they were mostly short stories, but it didn’t matter.
When they were making hundreds of dollars per month, I was still working on my first book.
I figured I’d made a huge priority mistake, but it was too late. I couldn’t turn back time and start over again.
Eventually, I did finish that book – and six more in that subcategory. And I also figured out what was wrong about my mindset.
Would You Eat Dinner at an Exotic Restaurant and then Go Home and Try to Cook the Same Meal?
There are only few people who can do that.
Most people work in a different way. They…
- Find a recipe that explains how to cook that meal.
- They buy the ingredients.
- They prepare the ingredients.
- And then they follow the description to a T.
Once they’ve cooked that meal a few times, they’ve gained enough confidence to start experimenting.
So they add their own flavor to the meal.
Wouldn’t you do the same?
Then Why Do Most People Think that Writing Fiction Is Different?
Reading romance and writing it are two different beasts. Just like eating an exotic meal and cooking it is.
But just like you can learn to cook it by following a recipe – and then gain enough confidence to put your own mark on the meal, you can learn to write romance.
And do it quickly to test the waters.
Don’t make the mistake I did. Don’t start out by being too ambitious.
Back then, I refused to start with short stories. I’d finally figured out how to go from writing three short stories years earlier to writing novella length stories. I saw it as taking a step backwards to write short stories again.
I was wrong.
In fact, I know several writers who have learned the trade and who write with confidence but still write short stories. Why?
Because It’s Fast and It Makes Them Money
As a self-published author, there are several ways to make sales.
You can use paid advertising. There’s a learning curve, but authors who spend hundreds of dollars daily on advertising say it’s profitable.
Traditionally published authors can also get away with publishing a book a year – or even less frequently. But they have a publishing house with a huge marketing machine behind them.
Luckily, there are other options.
Having more books out there helps gain momentum and bring in royalties.
I’ve noticed that my books take off by themselves, if there’s a only short time span between the publishing dates.
The sweet spot for my romance books has been between ten days and two weeks.
Can you publish a new romance every two weeks?
Yes, you can. If you focus on short stories.
Several of the best-selling authors I’ve been in contact with write and publish romances of between 5,000 and 10,000 words.
And no, if you were afraid that they have to be steamy books, you don’t have to worry.
Clean romance is popular.
But it doesn’t sell itself completely. Publishing one book isn’t enough. You need frequent new titles, but they can be short.
How to Write a Romance Story Every Two Weeks – Even If You’ve Never Finished a Book Before
If you had a recipe, telling you step by step how to cook a meal, do you think you could follow the instructions and produce something edible?
Of course you could.
And the same thing is true about writing fiction.
All you would need to do is to follow a blueprint and write 750 words per day over a two-week period and you would have your first finished story.
Then you could repeat it, write a new short story following the same step-by-step guideline, and after a few books, you would have enough confidence to start tweaking things around.
Just like you would when you’ve learned to make a new meal. After you’ve made it a few times, you would add spices of your own choice and remove others. You would add more of one ingredient and less of another.
The meal would become your creation.
But learning how to make it the first time, following a recipe, forms the basic ground for your confidence.
That’s one of the many issues I struggled with myself.
I didn’t have enough confidence. An inner voice constantly told me how badly I wrote and how people would hate my books. It’s a struggle I don’t wish for anyone else.
